Music Exchange 2013 getting down to the business of making music / Call for DEMO’s

Music Exchange, South Africa’s two day independent music conference that gets everyone in the music industry talking, is set to take place from 21-22 March 2013.

As a much-anticipated highlight on the Cape Town music calendar, Music Exchange brings the industry together to discuss, debate, collaborate and get down to the business of making music. Every year it offers artists, industry professionals and like-minded individuals the chance to network, exchange ideas and catch up on the latest industry trends.

“Music Exchange had the result of tangibly opening up the “mysteries” of the industry to people who were keen enough to attend,” said Stuart Rubin, former Senior Vice President International Commercial Marketing Group for Sony BMG, “The speakers were experienced, practical and open people who had no reason not to answer candidly when asked – this definitely benefited delegates of the Exchange program”.

In 2013 Music Exchange has taken it a step further by creating a digital album from selected artists interested in uploading their demo on http://www.soundcloud.com/musicexchange/dropbox thereby qualifying them to be selected to feature on this collaboration album, celebrating the rise and rise of South African music.

All attending artists’ submissions will be considered for selection.

Artists will also be selected to perform at a showcase and are requested to upload their demos together with a photograph and a short biography no later than Friday 15 March 2010.

Over the years Music Exchange has been able to boast a number of success stories.

Collaboration between Evolver One and International Promoter and Manager, Doug Davenport at the 2010 Music Exchange conference was key to the group successfully recording their third album. This yielded 4 radio hits. For 7th Son the introduction to Stuart Rubin, former BMG Marketing Director, at the 2009 conference led them to re-record the Australian hit “The Boys Light Up”, which went on to became their first hit.

“Music Exchange 2013 will provide an amazing platform for producers, artists and everyone interested in knowing more about the music industry, affording them the opportunity to interact with industry giants! Invest in your career in the music industry and book today!

The NME described it best in the headline for their end of 2012 round up as the year “The World Fell In Love With Rodriguez“, and that pretty much sums it up….

1. Searching For Sugar Man

Two South Africans go on a quest to find cult US musician Sixto Rodriguez, whose lyrics of struggle and injustice had a huge impact in their apartheid-stained country in the ’70s. Cue a gloriously happy ending. The film is out on DVD and Blu-ray on 27 December. Best bit: The feverish reception for Rodriguez when he visits South Africa.

Rotter and Friends – Wisdom » Rodriguez Official Shirts Come To Reality

Rodriguez Tee Shirt
Rodriguez Tee Shirt

I am so proud to release the first official illustrated tee shirts of Rodriguez and honored to have been asked to scribble the magic, approved by the man himself. Special thanks to Light In The Attic, David Black (photographer of wonder), Stella Berkofsky, and Rodriguez’s family, for helping make this project happen. Rodriguez’s music is a very personal labor of love-it has hit many heart strung moments and inspired greatly for ages. Beyond that, his story is legendary even beyond the gifts he gives all musically: selfless, talented, and genuine: we salute.

When Sixto Rodriguez recorded his debut album Cold Fact in 1969, he dreamed of pop stardom. But, far from the epicentre of the late ’60s folkie scene, the Detroit-based son of Mexican immigrants found that his defining statement was criminally overlooked.

Rodriguez went back to reality, working as a gas station attendant, studying philosophy, campaigning for local government and sticking to his principals. But over time, Cold Fact was rediscovered in the strangest places. Through circumstance and chance, Rodriguez learned he had become a cult figure in South Africa, where Cold Fact had become a beacon of counter-cultural pop for legions of fans who presumed its creator dead. By ’98 he was playing a series of sold-out arena shows in South Africa and Australia.

SEARCHING FOR EXPOSURE? TRY SUGAR MUSIC….

Brian Currin and Stephen “Sugar” Segerman met in 1997 through the rediscovery of Rodriguez. A mutual love of music (especially the South African kind) and sharing it with others, saw them launch Sugar Music in the early-2000’s.

Sugar Music has since become the hub for many projects including SugarMan.org, The South African Rock Encyclopedia, The SA Rock Digest, SAmp3.com, Mabu Vinyl, and a number of other joint and associated music ventures.

Since 2004, Sugar Music has been supplying Channel 24 (MWeb’s entertainment portal) with MP3s by South African artists of all genres, and from all decades, for the MP3 section of their Homepage.

These MP3s are made available as free downloads by Channel 24, to help give exposure to all these artists and their music. Some tracks are full length (if requested by the artist), but most are edited to be between 70% and 75%, as long as they are longer than 2 minutes.

An image, a short blurb, and a hyperlink are included with each entry.

If you would like to take advantage of this excellent promotional opportunity, at no cost to yourself, please supply a list of songs that you are authorising for free download and which web address you would prefer each song linked to. Sugar Music will take care of the rest.

Sugar Music submits monthly reports to NORM, of all tracks supplied to Channel 24, to ensure transparency and compliance.

For more information please contact Sugar on sugar@sugarmusic.co.za or phone 021-4237635.
