‘Searching for Sugar Man’ star Rodriguez to make his Royal Albert Hall debut | Life at the Hall

Rodriguez

Cult singer-songwriter Rodriguez will return to London in 2015 to make his Royal Albert Halldebut in a special show on 7 May 2015.

Rodriguez’s rise to international fame is perhaps one of the most fascinating stories in music. After the release of two little-sold albums in the early 1970s, Rodriguez’s work became hugely successful in South Africa, Australia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, unbeknownst to him.

Years later a group of loyal South African fans attempted to make contact with their hero; their successful efforts and Rodriguez’s intriguing life story were retold in the 2012 documentary film Searching for Sugar Man. The feature won in the Best Documentary categories at the 2013 BAFTA and Academy Awards and has brought Rodriguez’s music belated international fame and acclaim.

This 2015 show will be Rodriguez’s first performance at London’s most iconic venue and follows sell-out concerts at prestigious venues around the world.

Tickets

Tickets for Rodriguez at the Royal Albert Hall go on sale at 10am on Wednesday 1 October 2014 and will be available via www.royalalberthall.com or by calling the Box Office on 020 7589 8212.

Sipho Hotstix Mabuse to celebrate Burnout with his show “Timelessness 50 years on” Wed 1 Oct Lyric Theatre

TIMELESSNESS 50 years on

On Wednesday evening, 1 October, for one-night-only, one of South Africa’s, and indeed the world’s, most admired and respected musicians – Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse – is set to perform at The Lyric Theatre, Johannesburg, in a special, single performance, affair.

Titled Timelessness, a name coined by Mabuse, the show will  tip its hat to the masters, taking fans on musical journey filled with extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, performances.

2014 is a momentous year in Mabuse’s 50-year career immersion in music. Not only is it his golden anniversary of his unwavering commitment and contribution to South African music, it is 30 years ago his now 500 000 copy-selling single “Burn Out” changed the face of shape of Afro-pop and township jive like no other song or artist in pop music history.

Timelessness

From his first group, Harari, through to his stellar solo career that spans the better part of his adult life, Mabuse’s Lyric Theatre reveal is going to be jam-packed with so many hits and memories, beyond “Burn Out”, that “we might not be able to fit it in,” he jokes.

Beyond competent and hugely applauded, the magic this musician makes is practically impossible to pigeonhole. Drummer, flautist, alto flautist, pianist, saxophonist, kalimba player, timbale and African drummer, Mabuse’s raw ability and talent know no limit!

His name became synonymous with township jive nearly three decades ago, and today his live performances still present the master’s art as the stuff of legend.

As the musical ambassador for South Africa, performing in virtually every country in Africa and touring the US, England, France, Germany and Italy, amongst many more, Mabuse’s recorded and produced the likes of Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Ray Phiri and Sibongile Khumalo.

Head out to The Lyric Theatre, at Gold Reef City, and come celebrate the multiple anniversaries with his friends, peers and contemporaries. Expect tributes, tears and Timelessness aplenty as Sipho”Hotstix” Mabuse unpacks, retells and delights the night with songs that remain as perpetual as the master maker himself.

Rodriguez Has Three Albums In Australian Chart | Noise11.com

Rodriguez

Rodriguez has three albums in the Australian chart this week. The Rodriguez catalogue took an active run on the ARIA chart after his 2014 tour was announced last week.

Rodriguez was last in Australia only last year for Bluesfest and played a national tour with backing band The Break, featuring members of Midnight Oil and Violent Femmes.

The first Rodriguez album ‘Cold Fact’ (1970) is at 11, the ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ soundtrack is at 22 and his second and final album ‘Coming From Reality’ (1971) is at 25.

The Detroit singer songwriter Rodriguez has only ever recorded the two albums from the early ‘70s. Consider that at that time in Australia it was pre-FM radio, pre-Internet, pre-Cable and Digital TV. Australia was completely cut off culturally from the rest of the world at that time.
