MIFF Awards Audience Award for Searching For Sugar Man | FilmInk

In the documentary category, audiences picked Searching For Sugar Man. Directed by Malik Bendjelloul, the film recounts the unbelievable true story of Detroit born rocker Sixto Rodriguez, who languished in obscurity in the US but unknowingly became a star in South Africa after his music was embraced as an anthem in the struggle against Apartheid. Sugar Man has already won audience awards at the Sundance, Los Angeles and Durban Film Festivals, and beat out last year’s Oscar-winning football doco, Undefeated, to snatch the prize in Melbourne. It opens in Australia on October 4 through Madman. Undefeated, however, came in as another audience favourite.
