Thanks for the link… There are only a few times in musical history when the cover version actually sounds better than the original. Hey you is one of those. the POPSHOP13 cover is a gazillion times better. The Start really messed the song up and this is why it never picked up. I grew up with the popshop and springbok hitparade records, and I am glad I found this song, but disgusted in its execution. It really has that ugly britt metal punk sound in the voice of the singers. The harmonica also sound like an amateur to that of the cover.
It is amazing still!

Hey You by Hey You was featured on SA compliation, PopShop Vol.13. I think I still have it somewhere on vinyl, the one with a picture of Martin Locke in a little spaceship on the album cover?

The song was originally done by a Canadian band The Start. In 1979, Andrew St. George, Richard Rudolph, Tony Blaise (writer of the song Hey You) and Mark Valdez formed a band in St. George’s Toronto basement. Through an ad in the Toronto Star, they added Simon Slinger as the lead vocalist, and The Start was in business. After a few shows at Lee’s Palace, The Horseshoe, The Edge and Larry’s Hideaway, they were noticed by Capital Records and offered an album deal. In 1980, Hey You was released as an album and a single.
Thanks for this info … the two versions are very similar, but there are differences … any idea on who the band Hey You were?
I suppose a long shot might be the Bachman-Turner Overdrive version off the Four Wheel Drive Album although released in 1975 I seem to recall the track Hey You only got going much later?
