Rodriguez Has Three Albums In Australian Chart | Noise11.com

Rodriguez

Rodriguez has three albums in the Australian chart this week. The Rodriguez catalogue took an active run on the ARIA chart after his 2014 tour was announced last week.

Rodriguez was last in Australia only last year for Bluesfest and played a national tour with backing band The Break, featuring members of Midnight Oil and Violent Femmes.

The first Rodriguez album ‘Cold Fact’ (1970) is at 11, the ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ soundtrack is at 22 and his second and final album ‘Coming From Reality’ (1971) is at 25.

The Detroit singer songwriter Rodriguez has only ever recorded the two albums from the early ‘70s. Consider that at that time in Australia it was pre-FM radio, pre-Internet, pre-Cable and Digital TV. Australia was completely cut off culturally from the rest of the world at that time.

“Sugar Man” Rodriguez announces 2014 Australian tour

d587e_1317411

Legendary singer-songwriter Rodriguez will return to Australia in October and November to play headline shows in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and two shows at the Opera House in Sydney.

After his two albums – 1969’s Cold Fact and 1971’s Coming from Reality – went unnoticed in America, Rodriguez eventually turned his efforts elsewhere, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family.

Now Rodriguez is enjoying a revival after been “rediscovered” by the Oscar Award winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man in 2012 and will be touring Australia for the fourth time since 2007. Although the film focuses on the singer-songwriter cult following in South Africa, Rodriguez also had a significant fanbase in Australia; he first toured Australia in the late ‘70s and returned in 1981 playing shows with Midnight Oil. He has reguraly dropped a cover of Midnight Oil’s ‘Redneck Wonderland’ into his Australian setlists alongside his takes on Carl Perkins’ ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Like A Rolling Stone’.

Message Of The Day From The Rodriguez Forum

Fernando Albiar Jr writes – “In ’69 my dad was graduating high school. He was a fan of Bob Dylan, Neal Young, Van Morrison. In 2012, Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He was depressed and my mom would say his problem was that he stopped listening to music….until he came across the Sugarman story and documentary. He bought a CD and soon she would complain that he is always listening to Sixto. I love that this music brings him joy. We had the chance to see him live at the Greek in LA in May 2014. We loved it! PS: My dad was a carpenter for over 30 years.”

We Thought We’d Share This Lovely Message From Christine To Rodriguez On Today’s Sugarman.org Forum…

Poet extraordinaire. What memories. A youth relived. 1977 ‘Rodriguez At His Best’ is still one of my all time favourite albums. I just watched the doco and sang along with every song. Had no idea Rodriguez was so popular in South Africa back then. It certainly answered a lot of questions for me; he was always a mystery. To the man – your words speak of truth and an honest life lived. I’ll never have the money to see you in concert, but your lyrics and music drifted through my many dwellings marking the past years with memories sweet and sad. Thank you, Christine.

SA’s biggest fully orchestrated rock musical, Rockville 2069 to premiere at Artscape

South Africa’s biggest, fully orchestrated, technologically sophisticated rock musical production, Rockville 2069, will have its world première with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) at Artscape Opera House in August.

Set at the 100th anniversary of Woodstock, Rockville 2069 is a love story set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world. Featuring a cast of 25 with lead singer Joseph Clark (of Queen at the Opera) and the Kyle Peterson seven-piece rock band with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, it combines artists and musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds to bring a new, sometimes discordant, always thrilling voice to the rock musical scene.

The lead roles will be played by Joseph Clark (Papa), Vicki Jayne (Mama), Stephan Van Huyssteen (JohnnyReb) and Josie Piers (Danielle). With fast moving scene changes, the use of 3D animation and a 100m2 LED screen, technology plays a key role in creating this believable, constantly shifting production.

Rockville 2069 has been in the making for five years and is the artistic brainchild of composer, Johnny Ray. The end result is an emotionally soaring journey of caution, hope, optimism, rebellion and joy which aims to transform and create music while sending a powerful message of change through a sustainable way of life.

The plot tells of an earth destroyed by man’s neglect and climate change. Only Rockville, a small archipelago of islands, survives and is now home to a group of peace-loving rockers, sound technicians and musicians.

“The addition of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra is a show-stopping element”, says Johnny Ray, “and we know that all theatre management eyes are on this production which we hope to take from Cape Town to the rest of the world.”

The glittering Red Carpet Première takes place on 30 August 2014 at Artscape, with the grand foyers themed out by Jay Jays and Bothners /Roland and the menu includes complimentary wine (Hill & Dale) and canapés.

Uber has partnered with Rockville 2069 and is offering a FREE ride to the value of R 200 to all new users. Simply sign up with Uber and use the promotional code RV2069 to travel to and from the concert in style.
