“aKING, through their intricately-spun stories of suburban survivalism, give profundity to blue collar life in a South African context. It doesn’t hurt that they’re brilliant at it.” Xavier vd Sandt, Cape Town Independent Newspapers

En so is Dans Republic gebore.

Ecclectic, unpredictable and supremely musically innovative, Foto Na Dans is back in 2010 with a massive hit collaboration, a new album and a nation-wide tour later in the year.
Dans Republic, Foto Na Dans’s collaboration with Flash Republic, started out like many other brilliant projects – in a bar. The guys from Foto Na Dans met Flash Republic’s Tamara Dey while she was busy promoting Flash Republic’s album launch in a Jo’burg drinking spot. Jagermeister flowed and a firm friendship was forged.
A while later in 2009, at the SAMA Awards, Victor Edward from music channel MK asked the guys from Flash Republic to consider a collaboration with a rock band. They thought it a great idea and suggested Foto Na Dans. And so Dans Republic was born.
Dans Republic ‘s single, Afrikaans, has since been play listed on national radio station 5FM, as well as a number of regional and campus radio stations, where it has been fantastically received by listeners. The music video for Afrikaans remained at the #1 spot on music channel MK’s charts for three weeks, and Foto Na Dans and Flash Republic will perform Afrikaans live for the first time at the MK Awards ceremony in February 2010.
Foto Na Dans will start recording their next album in February. The album will be released in May, with a nationwide tour to follow in August. Foto Na Dans fans can look out for regular updates about the recording process and the album in the media and on the band’s facebook and myspace pages.

Ever wonder where ‘Alternative Afrikaans’ started? Tune into this classic satire of moustachioed Pretoria men and all they symbolised back in the bad old apartheid days. Off legendary rock rebel, James Phillips’ cult classic ‘Wie Is Bernoldus Niemand?’, released on the seminal Shifty Records label.
Ian Roberts and his bakgat band of boeremusiek brothers team up with super romantic Afrikaans rap star Jack Parow on this tongue-in-cheeky World Cup anthem-in-the-making anthem about braaivleis, brandy and Vuvuzela blowing! Off heir third album of all star collaborations, “Heuningland”.
Hip indie dance rock combo celebrate Heritage Day (aka Braai Day) by hooking up with heavyweight hip-hop players HHP and JR, and the Grammy winning Soweto Gospel Choir. It’s a contagiously fun colab with Die Heuwels’ Pierre Greeff singing in English, HHP and JR keeping it real and the Soweto Gospel Choir adding their soaring African harmonies: “So it’s a flyday. We call it a braai day….”
What happens when Afrikaans progressive rockers Foto Na Dans invite Flash Republic’s Tamara Dey, Ryan Dent and Craig Massiv to remix one of their unreleased tracks? Imagine Muse dropping a soul-drenched tab of electro dance while giving ‘Die Taal’ the thumbs up and you’re half way there!
The legendary Afrikaans troubadour gives this winsome ballad off his classic ‘Madiba Bay’ a lyrical makeover to include digital innovations like ADSL and Skype. Bakgat, bru!
Legendary singer songwriter maps the moment he morphed from Andre Letoit into mythical alternative Afrikaans troubadour Koos Kombuis on this classic Voelvry-era acoustic ballad off his excellent debut, ‘Niemandsland & Beyond!’.
“I know my language has always been my limit…/the heart of the fool lives inside of his mouth,” serenades Laudo on this spanking new symphonic rock power ballad off the indie rock darlings’ brand new CD, ‘Against All Odds’. Produced by the multiple award-winning Theo Crous.
Rising Jozi star gives Mzansi house fans their fix with this contagious fusion of soulfully deep, hip shaking homegrown grooves featuring Zimkitha. Off his brand new 15-track dance album, ‘Muzimania Unleashed’.
Looking for a lekker tjune to soundtrack your next car cruise from Pretoria West to Hartebeespoort Dam? Tune into Dewald Wasserfall (vocals, guitar) and Larry Pullen’s (guitar) buoyant melodic rocker about going nowhere slowly. Off their debut album ‘Asem In’.

Expect the third and final chapter of the Otis Waygood story in February –1971’s “Ten light claps and a scream” comes complete with a rare bonus track recorded in the UK plus some newly discovered photos and an updated biography…also in the loop at the same time is the third McCully Workshop album, “Ages”, recorded in 1975 with several non album bonus tracks. This album rounds off the McCully’s prog rock period and features some great guitar and flute interplay – a must for Workshop fans!
February/March will see the release of the legendary Wildebeest album “Bushrock 1’, featuring Freedom’s Children drummer Colin Pratley and Jackhammer’s Piet Botha. Recorded live in 1981, the album has long been a progressive rock gem with it’s thundering African percussion, swooping Celtic violin work and psych guitars….Finally we have managed to secure the rights to The Third Eye catalogue and will release the bands three albums ,”Awakening” (1969) , “Searching” (1969) and “Brother” (1970) on one extended double CD. Hailing from Durban The Third Eye is Hammond driven prog rock at it’s best, included will be rare photos, B sides and retrospective liner notes from the band members.
In late March/April the mythical Hammak “Live !” album will make it’s CD debut courtesy of band members Keith Lentin and Anton Fig. Regarded as one of the finest ‘jam ‘ albums in SA rock music this album has been on fan wish lists for over a decade…Coming on like the bastard child of Rare Earth meets Grand Funk Railroad “There’s a light, there’s a way” by The Invaders is earmarked for the end of April. Originally a mid 60’s pop band The Invaders mutated into heavy rockers by the beginning of the 70’s and created one of the finest albums in that genre.
April/May – The third Hawk album “Live and well” will include all the original tracks plus some bonus songs, new photos and an updated biography. Joining that will be the long awaited double cd set of 60’s South African ‘beat’ music featuring the likes of The A-Cads , Staccatos,John E Sharpe,Tidal Wave and many more…

SA ROCKERS, STARSEED GAIN UK SUCCESS WITH THEIR LATEST ALBUM, PEACE MACHINE

‘…sounding truly gargantuan. This machine is unstoppable.’ Big Cheese
‘…soulful vocals, crunching guitars and savage drumming’ Rock Sound
“A winning combination of a perfect hard rock and soulful voice confronted by riffs resembling the work of Queens Of The Stone Age and Alice In Chains. We’ve finally found a band that can really compete with the big boys.” BBC Introducing
“a great new British band…really, REALLY good stuff…Look out for the album (Peace Machine)…Get it if you can… Believe me, they’re hotly tipped for 2010!” Ian Camfield (XFM)
“For fans of Live, Our Lady Peace, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden – Peace Machine has plenty to savour”
Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden and BBC Radio 6 Rock Show)
"They are a really big gutsy kinda rock ‘n roll band. Huge soaring vocals, big chunky guitars. Sounds like a punch in the face. I like it!" Alex Baker, Kerrang! Radio
Anthemic rockers Starseed are set to release the single, “SHINE”, in South Africa on 5 April 2010. Taken from the album, “Peace Machine”, “Shine” is a mammoth punch-to-the-gut of a track, serving up a compelling mixture of mega riffing and infectious melody.
Their debut album, ‘Peace Machine’ (released in the UK at the end of 2009), has already proved to be both a critical and commercial success, prompting XFM and Rock Radio to reel the band in for a live session as well as gaining the attention of UK festivals organisers for 2010.
“Peace Machine” was recorded throughout the summer of 2009 at Stakeout Studios with producer Jason Wilcock (Reuben, Fightstar, The Ghost Of A Thousand), and features twelve tracks. Album opener, ‘Shine’, is the lead off single and has an accompanying video which has been played on Scuzz TV and was shot by Sitcom Soldiers (Therapy?, In Case Of Fire). Watch it!
During the last few years, the quintet have relentlessly worked in the UK having spent most of their time on the road. They performed at Download Festival in 2007, have packed out many top venues and received a nomination in the category of “Best Live Band” at the Indy Music Awards in 2008.
With a sound that takes in the epic, melodic rock tendencies of the resurgent grunge scene (Pearl Jam to Alice In Chains) all the way through to the intelligent aggression and energy of hard rock stalwarts such as Cancer Bats, Soil and Alexisonfire, Starseed offer up a sound as dynamically post-millennial as you could wish for.
This UK based, South African quintet is fired up and ready for an intense 2010.
‘We can’t wait,’ exhorts front man Russell Spence. ‘Last year was just amazing for us and we are primed and ready for an incredible start to this new decade’.
The band will undertake a UK tour in Feb/March 2010. See www.myspace.com/starseedrock for dates.
Peace Machine is available on iTunes for download or can be bought from www.planetstarseed.com

A fresh remix of The Who‘s “My Generation” is coming to raise money for Haitian earthquake relief.
The Black Eyed Peas‘ will.i.am. tells Billboard.com that he was commissioned to remix the iconic 1965 rock anthem, which will air during the Super Bowl XLIV broadcast on Feb. 7 — where the Who is performing at halftime — and then go on sale via iTunes. “It’s the Who, their song, and then I altered the lyric to fit my generation now and then have Slash on it,” will.i.am says. “It was awesome. I loved that song way before this even came up, and talking to Pete Townshend on the phone is like, ‘What?! I’m talking to Pete Townshend on the phone?!’ That was awesome, being able to just hear their advice and everything. Those guys are just awesome.”
The “My Generation” remix will be part of a big month for will.i.am and company as the Peas head to the Grammy Awards, where they’re up for six trophies, including Album of the Year for “The E.N.D.” and Record of the Year for “I Gotta Feeling.” will.i.am won’t hazard a guess on how many they’ll win, however; “I don’t want to jinx it,” he says with a laugh.
The group is also gearing up for the Feb. 14 launch of a world tour that will stretch into the spring of 2011. “We’re turning the whole arena into a club,” he says. “It’s like futuristic partying on stage — robots and androids and funky beats, crazy lights and lasers, crazy costumes, subwoofers, like just bass in yo’ face!…AEG’s doing this tour with us, and when they came to see the (rehearsal) they were like, ‘Wow, you guys got more stuff than Michael (Jackson), so that felt pretty good.” He says the set list will encompass everything, including earlier hits such as “Let’s Get Started,” “Where is the Love” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.”
will.i.am says all of the shows will be recorded and show on his Dipdive Internet platform. He also hints that some new Peas music may surface during the course of the tour. “We’ve got some tricks up our sleeves for something as early as June,” he says, noting that it will be a recording but declining to specify further because “I just don’t want the group to get mad at me. I’d rather say it as a group.”

Greetings all. I cannot even begin to describe the feeling of exhilaration and joy I’m feeling, as I have just purchased tickets to see the living legend, Rodriguez, perform at the Tivoli in Brisbane, on 31st March 2010.
Thanks to subscribing to the Sugarman Newsletter, I received an email with the exciting news that he is touring Australia.
I have been a massive fan of Rodriguez since I was a boy in the late 70’s and have waited more than 30 years for a chance to see him live. I missed the Byron Blues Festival concert in 2007 and was so disappointed, but now have tickets in my hand to see this amazing singer/songwriter. What a great birthday present from my wife!
The warmth and sincerity that oozes from Rodriguez is simply amazing – his lyrics are inspirational and his melodies delightful.
